{"id":9172,"date":"2023-01-22T03:41:19","date_gmt":"2023-01-22T03:41:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.sorted.digital\/?p=9172"},"modified":"2023-01-22T03:41:19","modified_gmt":"2023-01-22T03:41:19","slug":"instagram-shop-easy-explanation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stage.techandmoney.com\/index.php\/2023\/01\/22\/instagram-shop-easy-explanation\/","title":{"rendered":"Instagram Shop: What it is &amp; what&#8217;s the future?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/sharer\/sharer.php?u=https%3A%2F%2Fapurvs-newsletter.beehiiv.com%2Fp%2Fig-shop-tried-hard-got-far\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/sharer\/sharer.php?u=https%3A%2F%2Fapurvs-newsletter.beehiiv.com%2Fp%2Fig-shop-tried-hard-got-far\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/intent\/tweet?url=https%3A%2F%2Fapurvs-newsletter.beehiiv.com%2Fp%2Fig-shop-tried-hard-got-far\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/sharing\/share-offsite?url=https%3A%2F%2Fapurvs-newsletter.beehiiv.com%2Fp%2Fig-shop-tried-hard-got-far\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Read time:&nbsp;<em>3.5 minutes<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was mid of pandemic in 2020 when&nbsp;<em>Adam Mosser<\/em>i (Head of Instagram)&nbsp;launched \u2018Shops\u2019 \u2014 an in-app shopping feature that enticed consumers to shop as they scrolled.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It looked like this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/media.beehiiv.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/fit=scale-down,format=auto,onerror=redirect,quality=80\/uploads\/asset\/file\/aae86675-26a8-47d7-8448-e7ee7180e47e\/Screenshot_2023-01-15_at_5.10.31_PM.png\" alt=\"\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Instagram shopping has the following features:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Shoppable tags<\/li><li>An image of the product<\/li><li>A description of the product<\/li><li>Product Cost<\/li><li>A link that takes them directly to your website, where they can purchase the product<\/li><li>Related products<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>When IG shop was announced, there was a huge hubbub among e-commerce players.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Everyone wanted to try it, but very few knew how to set it up and even fewer saw sales happening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But like anything new that&#8217;s born out of Digital (Vine, Crypto, metaverse) people were excited to get their hands on it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I was working at Future group at that time, managing Digital spending for more than 10+ brands &amp; suddenly every brand saw IG shop as their go-to sales channel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And rightly so,<em>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/flight.beehiiv.net\/v2\/clicks\/eyJhbGciOiJIUzI1NiIsInR5cCI6IkpXVCJ9.eyJ1cmwiOiJodHRwczovL3d3dy5zb3J0ZWQuZGlnaXRhbC9wcm9kdWN0L2Etei1kaWdpdGFsLW1hc3RlcmNsYXNzLyIsInBvc3RfaWQiOiJhN2E0OTVjMS03MjViLTRkY2ItODZkZi02MjNmYjJlMmE1MmIiLCJwdWJsaWNhdGlvbl9pZCI6IjdhYzA2M2Y1LTJhZTQtNDBkYy04YTlmLTA1NjlhNTFhNzgzYyIsInZpc2l0X3Rva2VuIjoiNGU0NGMwOWItMTQ5NC00YjU2LWE1ZmMtM2Y4MDBiNjgzNjk4IiwiaWF0IjoxNjc0MzU4NTQzLjcyLCJpc3MiOiJvcmNoaWQifQ.V4xkFWvpxqQf76v2-KDFE442k344I-R_aA9WrGzWWW0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Content-to-Commerce<\/a><\/em>, all on one platform. Isn&#8217;t that what all of us want?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Webinars, Clubhouse chats, Twitter space conversations, and Podcasts were all on IG shop and its rise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>People called it the future of social commerce.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I too implemented it for 3 brands at Future Group and waited for metrics to improve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some of the internal metrics we were tracking after implementing IG shop were:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Number of Clicks on the shopping tags<\/li><li>CTR of different categories &amp; products<\/li><li>Delta in the sale-thru rate of the products that were listed on IG shop<\/li><li>Conversions<\/li><li>Conversion rate<\/li><li>Traffic on PDPs (Product description pages)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>We waited for a week for the campaign to stabilize, and a week turned into a month, a month to 2 months but none, I repeat NONE of the above metrics had considerable growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>IG shop was not contributing more than 1% of the overall sales from the website.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Later, post talking to a few more marketers and agencies, I realized, there was a lot of faff around the topic. People are talking about it but very few merchants\/brands were adopting it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today, while some brands have enabled IG shop on their Instagram handles, only a handful of brands use the feature in India to push products.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And there have been no used cases or organic case studies of brands seeing success.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So,&nbsp;<strong>what exactly went wrong with IG shop? And is there a future for it in India and the world?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>IG Shopping was the darling of the 2020 era &#8211; the future of social commerce, changing the game for social platforms as we know it by implementing a tap-to-shop feature on top of images or videos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Driving visual inspiration, top-to-bottom funnel conversion, etc etc.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>IG Shopping was the prettiest product at the party because the idea of the \u201cSuperapp\u201d was just gaining traction, thanks to inspo from China\u2019s WeChat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And IG Shopping was the perfect implementation of the Superapp &#8211; taking Instagram\u2019s core capability (photo\/video sharing) and building a new potential revenue stream from it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What could go wrong!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Well, plenty.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are a host of product and market value reasons- the product broke a ton, users weren\u2019t using, merchants weren\u2019t adopting&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But I think there\u2019s something more foundational here that\u2019s worth addressing.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There is a famous thesis on&nbsp;<em><a href=\"https:\/\/flight.beehiiv.net\/v2\/clicks\/eyJhbGciOiJIUzI1NiIsInR5cCI6IkpXVCJ9.eyJ1cmwiOiJodHRwczovL2hici5vcmcvMjAxNi8wOS9rbm93LXlvdXItY3VzdG9tZXJzLWpvYnMtdG8tYmUtZG9uZSIsInBvc3RfaWQiOiJhN2E0OTVjMS03MjViLTRkY2ItODZkZi02MjNmYjJlMmE1MmIiLCJwdWJsaWNhdGlvbl9pZCI6IjdhYzA2M2Y1LTJhZTQtNDBkYy04YTlmLTA1NjlhNTFhNzgzYyIsInZpc2l0X3Rva2VuIjoiNGU0NGMwOWItMTQ5NC00YjU2LWE1ZmMtM2Y4MDBiNjgzNjk4IiwiaWF0IjoxNjc0MzU4NTQzLjcyLCJpc3MiOiJvcmNoaWQifQ.Uuxc69vgP2r-Bp_e6hr8SE_c6YDo-BUtpqpSjEs5-Lc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Job-to-be-done<\/a>&nbsp;<\/em>by Harvard business school that says: Customers \u201chire\u201d a product to do a job; and if that job isn\u2019t performed by the product, it simply gets \u201cfired.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Instagram Shopping was trying to do too much, too soon: change consumer behavior, drive merchant value, and build an entire shopping engine on top of a photo-sharing platform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And it got fired for it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Herein lies the issue with the theoretical Superapps &#8211; they lose track of their job-to-be-done.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By trying to do it all moderately well, they stop doing the thing that they\u2019re super at.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Truly, the supposed Superapps aren\u2019t superapp\u2019ing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead of cultivating organic products like IG Shopping and focusing on iteration until product market fit, the platforms are doing what they know best: slapping ye old ads machine on not-yet-fully-baked products to get some quick revenue hits in a down market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s demonstrative of a lack of patience, product investment, and followthrough.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Is there a future for Instagram Shopping?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/media.beehiiv.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/fit=scale-down,format=auto,onerror=redirect,quality=80\/uploads\/asset\/file\/0796037b-d201-4362-bad8-a2f3d70fba80\/Screenshot_2023-01-15_at_5.29.46_PM.png\" alt=\"\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Well, Instagram has changed the course. Feb onwards, the &#8216;Shop&#8217; tab will be removed from Instagram handles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However businesses will still be able to set up shop but people will discover products from posts, stories, and reels. Not by going on their handle and clicking on &#8216;view shop&#8217;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/media.beehiiv.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/fit=scale-down,format=auto,onerror=redirect,quality=80\/uploads\/asset\/file\/54140061-1266-41bc-a34b-f9d29f9bda58\/Screenshot_2023-01-15_at_5.45.07_PM.png\" alt=\"\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>I do believe that Meta will re-calibrate &#8216;Shop&#8217; as a feature on the meta family of apps. And will launch a renewed version of the same.
